Morning Fog

Morning Fog.  Escondido, California.  15 November 2009

I've learned a new phrase recently...'air drainage'. We know what a water drainage is...but do we often think of an air drainage. For example, apparently avocados like to grow on hillsides because the air flows thru them (air drainage) as it changes temperature and as the day progresses.

This image shows me an air drainage using a water drainage...the San Pasqual Valley. I've been waiting for a morning like this since the first time I saw fog laying in the valley bottom. My wife got me out of bed with a 'fog alert'. Fog is fickle...it changes quickly. Fortunately it was still there 20 minutes later. Huffing and puffing I had quickly dressed and hiked to the top of the hill...carrying my camera bag (about 30 pounds), my tripod (sturdy and heavy), and an essential cup of strong black coffee.

My thoughts as I approached the summit were focused...set up quickly at the first opportunity...use the tripod. Shoot. Then observe...relax and get into the scene...become the fog.

As I watched and moved around on the summit the scene changed continually. The fog ebbed and flowed, but it mainly receded up the valley. I shot about 6 panorama sets. This particular set was my choice because of the phenomenon of the fog backed up to the east of Highway 15 and with the ribbon bridge draped nicely in a foggy lace. The San Dieguito Watershed continues into the background.
