Q: Jim, why do you photograph panoramas?

A:  Well, some things we love...some things we like...some things we don't like.  You know how it goes.  Most everyone likes different things.

I photograph panoramas for several reasons:

  • I love panoramas.  They are a passion with me.
  • I seen them.  When I look around I see panoramas...both horizontal and vertical.
  • My panoramas are all composed of multiple images...so another reason is 'lots of detail'.
  • My goal is to leave a photographic record for the future.  Most images are composed of a subject.  My panoramas not only have a subject...but also the subject setting.  I think that 'setting' is very important.  Panoramas allow the recording of the setting.
  • Panoramas are different.  I like different.
  • Panoramas are not accidental...they are intentional.  Photographing a panorama is a workflow in itself.  Then the stitching, optimizing, titling, describing, and geotagging.  This all takes time.  My limit seems to be about 12 a month.  Sometimes as few as none.  Panoramas are not snap-shots.  Panoramas have more value than snap-shots.
  • I photograph panoramas because "that's who I am".
My Artist Statement contains a bit more detail.
