Oak, Granite, & Grass. Santa Ysabel Gorge, California. 25 May 2010.
To me this is one of those images that says 'California'. Cheryl and I were in the gorge to photograph a habitat rehabilitation project. In this image you can see one of the results of the project...natural grasses that are re-appearing. You can see them running from the center of the image off to the right lower corner.
I also find it interesting that the oak trees all have green grass underneath them. Not sure what causes the green. We talked about it and concluded that perhaps the green grasses are supported by both the duff under the trees, and and the shade.
Also in this image, atop the large rock lower center, is a ground squirrel (one of many).

Carney Valley, Ramona, California. 23 May 2010.

Cheryl and I were participating in a San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy sponsored hike, led by Leslie Woollenweber, to the Rose Quartz Mine in the Carney Valley.

The owner of the mine (in shorts near the backhoe bucket) met with us and explained the mine and the surrounding area. The green unit to the right is a 1,600 cfm air compressor, a backhoe is between the air compressor and the excavator. The pneumatic hammer used on the excavator is adjacent to the air compressor. The Rose Quartz Mine is quite old. It has been mined for quartz, tourmaline, and occasionally gems.
There were lots of wild flowers in bloom today.

The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy organized this hike to the Rose Quartz mine in Carney Valley. The hike, which was led by Leslie Woollenweber, was spectacular. There were wildflowers everywhere.
This image was photographed at the mine, which is an 'open pit', or 'quarry', type of mine. Primarily mined here was quartz and tourmaline. Garnets have been found at times. The owner was at the mine. He took time to speak with us and to teach us about the area. Notice all of the wildflowers in bloom.

Here is a view from the western end (at least for the moment) of the trail, looking east at The Crosby, a luxurious gated golf course community approximately five miles east of Interstate 5 and five miles west of Interstate 15. This master-planned community offers distinctive architecture, design and landscaping that blends with the regionally historic styles of Rancho Santa Fe and early California.

The colors of the image and the shadow rising from the bottom right inform us that the sun is setting. Joggers, surfers, beach walkers, barnacles, crashing surf, an Osprey eating at the end of the pier, and of course Scripps Pier itself.
Later in the morning Cheryl and I and the Exploring a Sense of Place group that we were with accompanied Wolf Berger, our hike expert, to the end of the pier. The Osprey was still there eating. And from the litter below his perch you could tell that he had had many meals there.

It was interesting to learn from Wolf that the Scripps Institution of Oceanography no longer specializes in just the ocean.
Until this day neither Cheryl or I had been aware of the Grebe constructing floating nests, laying eggs, raising their young. There had been a lot of construction here for the past few years...maybe that was why.
This morning on the water we counted perhaps 40 Grebe sitting on (or guarding) nests. A beautiful sight.
